Frying garam malpuas....what a huge one!!!
Last year when my friends went to Mohmad Ali road on a photo cum food walk ,I missed it and regretted it.This time I caught hold of my old college friends and made a plan for a a food walk down Mohmad Ali road, Bhendi Bazaar.Luckily we had Arif,a local to guide us along. We reached Minara Masjid by 8.30 pm and on the way there saw so many stalls all lit up for the evening. We were told they stayed that way till the early morning hours and there were huge crowds of buyers .It was like a huge fair! The most crowded was the lanes just behind the Masjid.
What an experience it was!The smells, the crowds, the food....all was a treat to the senses. All around there were lovers of food who were being lured by the enticing food in the stalls and restaurants .Here, there were many in their traditional wear like skull caps and hijabs and also those who had come to experience the thrill of the famous Mohmad Ali road Iftaar evening. After taking in the scene for a while and making our way through the crowds and clicking photographs we sat at Bademiya's for soup and bheja masala.Frankly speaking the word zubaan soup made me squirm unintentionally and I had only the broth and left the pieces of the goat tongue. After that we had a taste of the sundaal (not too good to taste) and then it was time to sit at Shalimar restaurant for the famous malpua-rabdi.It was a huge one and even three of us could not finish it.It tasted heavenly! After that we ate phirni which was less sweeter as compared to the rabdi and malpua. We also got a few phirnis (in earthen containers) packed. On our way out we saw the men frying the huge malpuas in huge pans.Once again we made our way back through the crowds.Heard the sound of the Azaan and saw the devouts rush towards the Masjid for their evening prayers,we learnt that there was a prayer at regular intervals during this period.I was happy experiencing this Iftaar evening and getting a few clicks that I wanted. This is an experience one should not miss. Even vegetarians can go there to have a taste of the sweet delicacies. Had a great time chatting up with old pals and eating, two things I enjoy doing.
After my food walk with friends I have read a few blog posts on the best places to visit during Iftaar evenings so next time I know where to head. It is always good to be prepared, what say???
